Lake Tahoe Water Trail

Summer, 2007

The Lake Tahoe Water Trail is busy this summer as more and more people get out and experience the best of our wonderful lake.  The members of the Lake Tahoe Water Trail Committee are also out and about, but here is an update of the things we are working on.

·         The new LTWT membership and sponsorship brochures are ready for distribution!  Look for a copy on this website or printed versions at key kayak rental outlets and Basin visitors centers in August.  We are looking to expand our contact list and encourage more active participation in the upcoming events.  At $25 for an individual and $50 for a sponsoring business, membership is a steal!

Remember to pick up or order a copy of the First Edition of the Lake Tahoe Water Trail Map & Guide in various businesses around Lake Tahoe, including outfitters, sporting goods stores and marinas.  You can order it direct from Adventure Maps at 800-849-6589 or e-mail them at sales@adventuremaps.net.  You can also order them online at www.adventuremaps.net.  It’s an incredibly beautiful and detailed map of Lake Tahoe in full color and printed on waterproof and tear proof paper, full of information and locations of outfitters, campgrounds, picnic areas, lodging & restaurants adjacent to the lake, marinas, boat ramps, public docks,  points of interest and so much more.  There is even a GPS waypoints chart.  This is a Guide you really need to have before you set out on the lake with your kayak or canoe.

We hope everyone has seen the great articles in area newspapers lately about the water trail.  These articles are providing good information about how to use the trail for short day paddles or for longer trips.  The best of these articles are found [here].  Please send an email to the LTWT at info@LakeTahoeWaterTrail.org if you can help spread the word or are aware of other published writings about the Trail.  We’d love to have more articles linked to our website, so just let us know.

The California legislature is considering formally establishing the Lake Tahoe Water Trail in California as an official state water trail.  If the legislation passes and is signed by the Governor, it will:

1.     Advance the state goals to improve public access and recreational opportunities at Lake Tahoe.

2.     Generate economic benefits to the state and region through increased tourism.

3.     Provide for the appropriate management and future improvement of the Lake Tahoe Water Trail.

4.     Provide a framework for managing potential conflicts with sensitive environmental areas, motorized
recreational boaters, and private property owners.

5.     Confer equal status on the Lake Tahoe Water Trail with water trails on other outstanding water
bodies with similar designations, including San Francisco Bay, Chesapeake Bay, the Columbia
  River, and Lake Champlain.

Thanks to Assembly members Ted Gaines (R-xxx) and Lois Walk (D-Oakland) for co-writing the bill and all the locals who have helped it through the process.

The California Tahoe Conservancy, California State Parks, Nevada State Parks, and the US Forest Service are organizing the initial steps in preparation of the Lake Tahoe Water Trail Plan.  In the next several months, these agencies will be preparing a public input process to be sure that the plan reflects public concerns about LTWT operation, management, facilities, and outreach.  The LTWT Committee expects to be part of this process and we will be sure all our members receive notice and information about the process.  (Another reason to join!!)

 See you on the lake!!
